Naturopathic Medicine

Naturopathic Medicine

Naturopathic medicine is a form of primary healthcare that uses natural therapies to treat the root cause of disease rather than simply palliating symptoms. It is evidence-based medicine which follows six principles:

First, do no harm

Treat the root cause of disease

Emphasize prevention

Treat the whole person

Support the healing power of the body

Doctor as teacher

Naturopathic medicine uses standard medical diagnostics and in-depth understanding of physiology and biochemistry to determine the root cause of disease. Naturopathic treatments stimulate the body’s own ability to heal and maintain health. Treatment is individualized to best address the patient’s needs. Modalities that may be used include clinical nutrition, lifestyle counseling, botanical medicine, traditional Chinese medicine and acupuncture, physical medicine, hydrotherapy, and homeopathy.

Naturopathic Doctors (NDs) are regulated by the BDDT-N Board of Directors of Drugless Therapy- Naturopathy. NDs are extensively trained through an accredited post-graduate naturopathic medical program and are subjected to licensing examinations prior to obtaining a license to practice in a regulated province.
