Why Sweet Medicine?
The name for the Centre came to me in meditation by one of my favourite trees.
Sweet Medicine has many meanings. One one level, he was a historical figure and prophet of the Cheyenne people of what is now Oklahoma and Montana, the nation of one of my teachers. Sweet Medicine brought teachings about a good and respectful way of life. He also brought ceremonies and language, laws and a vision of the future. Although none of us have Sweet Medicine’s power or heritage, we honour the power of those stories as reminding us of what is important.
Many of the practitioners at the Sweet Medicine Integrative Health Centre have had the privilege of studying with indigenous teachers as part of our training. In many traditions, ‘medicine’ is understood to mean ‘wisdom’, or ‘teaching’, or many other things. In this way, we understand that medicine is much more than drugs and surgery.
When I have had a special or meaningful encounter with a patient in the office, where some essential part of them, of their being, comes to light and shines forth, I feel blessed, and I am left with a sweet feeling at the medicine that has passed between us and through us by our meeting and talking.
It is this feeling that is at the heart of Sweet Medicine.
We hope to share it with you.
In sincerity,
Dr. Conrad Sichler.
